There are three modes of reactive power capacitor compensation cabinets in the 10kV power system: The reactive power shunt capacitor compensation cabinet (reactive power high voltage capacitor compensation cabinet), the SVC static reactive power capacitor compensation cabinet and the SVG dynamic reactive power capacitor compensation cabinet; of which, the first two are reactive power capacitor passive compensation cabinet, and the latter is reactive power capacitor active compensation cabinet. The SVC uses IGBT for switching on/off of the traditional capacitors and electric reactors, and its basic principle of compensation still is capacitance compensation. However, the SVG is completely different, it is no longer equipped with the traditional capacitors.

A reactive current which is larger than the grid voltage can be generated by installing the parallel capacitors in the power grid, so it is possible to provide a reactive power for the inductive load, thus reducing the power grid power provided to the inductive load; as to the reactive power delivered by the line, since the flow of the reactive power in the power grid is reduced, the electric energy of loss of the power line and the transformer in transmitting the reactive power can be reduced. The reactive power shunt capacitor compensation cabinet usually requires the addition of a reactor to suppress the inrush current as well as suppress the harmonics. The 10kV SVG (Static Var Generator) static VAR reactive power capacitor compensation cabinet uses the turn-off power electronic device (IGBT) to form a self commutation bridge circuit. Through connecting the reactor to the power grid in a parallel manner, it is possible to properly adjust the amplitude and phase of the output voltage on the AC side of the bridge circuit or directly control the AC side current. The required reactive power is quickly absorbed or sent out to achieve the purpose of fast and dynamic regulation of the reactive power. As a reactive power capacitor compensation cabinet, it can not only track the impact current of the impact load, but also can track and compensate the harmonic current.
